Figures recently published in France, but covering the entire European scene, cast an interesting new light on women¡¯s shopping habits. Not surprisingly, newcomers to the adult fashion market are the biggest spenders with an average budget of 813 euros a year. After that, expenditure falls until the empty nester stage when women in the 55 to 64 age group once again go out on a spending spree with an average of 651 euros to invest. After the age of 65, however, average spending on fashion garments dips to a low of just 330 euros. Similar surveys recently undertaken in the UK also suggest that fashion-wise feminine life begins again in the 50s. Today 40 per cent of all consumer spending is accounted for by the 50 plus age group.
