A consortium, of which Integrax Bhd is a member, has been pre-qualified to bid for Ennore Port Ltd's common user coal terminal project in India, on a build-operate-transfer basis for 30 years.
The consortium comprises Leighton Construction (Asia) Pte Ltd as lead member and construction partner, Koch Transporttechnik Gmbh as handing equipment partner, Venkatesh Coke and Power Ltd as local partner and potential port user, and Integrax as operation and maintenance partner.
Integrax said in a statement that Ennore Port, sited 20km north of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, had a significant inner harbour area with deep-water access and large backup areas.
"Conceived as the major bulk cargo port on the eastern seaboard of India, Ennore Port will handle bulk cargoes and the coal and iron ore traffic that has emerged and will emerge in future from its hinterland," Intergrax said.
That includes the states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka which are well connected to Ennore Port by India's rapidly improving national rail and highway networks.
"It is anticipated that up to 8,000,000 tonnes per annum will represent the short-term cargo traffic target for steaming and coking coal," it added.
Integrax said that including other bulk traffic such as iron ore, the longer term growth would reflect the projected strong growth of India and its trading partners, including China.
"Our prospective role and interest in the bidding consortium is consistent with our existing expertise and interest and represents a small definitive step in progressing our regional ambitions," it said.
