Description :
Only member of the genus Sillaginodes and easily distinguished from other whitings by the tiny scales and dark spots on the sides. Differs from the similarly shaped grass whiting which is nor a true whiting - in having 2 usually separate dorsal fins and a forked caudal fin. King George Whiting has scales very small and numerous small dark spots onsides, It has 2 dorsal fins, often slightly separated, the first with 11-13 spines and the second with 1 spine and 25- 27 soft rays. King George Whiting has caudal fin forked and its body is elongate with pointed snout. King George Whiting is the largest whiting and makes excellent eating. The flesh is white, with fine texture and mild flavour.

Fillet :
Moderately deep, elongate, tapering gently, almost straight above, yellowish to greyish with dark veins, Outside with narrow, sharp-edged continuos, central red muscle bank : weakly converging EL. Weakly converging HL : Hs along middle fillet : integument silvery grey above, silvery white below. Inside flesh fine; belly flap sometimes present : peritoneum greyish. Usually skinned, skin thin, scale pockets small and irregular.

To 72 cm and possible 4.8 kg ( commonly 35-60 cm and 0.3 -1. 4kg )
Habitat

Habitat :
Costal marine : usually in depths less than 50m but reported to 200m. Juveniles prefer seagrass beds in shallow, sheltered bays, whereas adults are usually found deeper over sand or weed.

Fishery;
Seine nets, gillnets or handlines, off South Australia coast, where it is the most valuable scale fish caught. King George Whiting is mostly taken in autumn and winter. Popular target of recreational anglers throughout its range. In South Australia the recreational catch is equivalent to about half the commercial catch.
